شِگرف خُرد در سروده‌های ویلیام کارلوس ویلیامز

چکیده

سروده‌های ویلیام کارلوس ویلیامز به دلیل تصویرسازی زیبا و کارآمد و نیز ایجاز آن مشهور است. دستاورد شعری ویلیامز تنها در طول چند مصرع، چیزی شبیه به معجزه است. پیوند نزدیکی که این شاعر با جهان پیرامونش بنیان می‌گذارد، در حالی که به نظر می‌رسد اهمیت چندانی نداشته باشد، فضایی از امر شگرف را بر شعرهای او حاکم می‌کند؛ هرچند این احساس شگفتی و حیرت در شعرهای ویلیامز از موضوعاتی مجلل، خارق‌العاده، و بی‌کران سرچشمه نمی‌گیرد. ویلیامز به آشناترین، عادی‌ترین و ساده‌ترین لحظات زندگی روزانه، رنگ و بویی متعالی می‌بخشد. یافتن ویژگی‌های شگرف در عادی‌ترین مسائل و اشیاء زندگی مفهومی است که «شِگرفِ خُرد» نامیده می‌شود. این پژوهش با ترسیم نظریه‌های موجود پیرامون مفهوم امر «شگرف» (امر والا) و همچنین تعالی‌گرایی رمانتیک و ژانر هایکو می‌کوشد تا چگونگی این تعالی، شگفت‌انگیزی، و شگرف‌سازی سروده‌های ویلیامز را بررسی کند. در این راستا به نظریات ادموند برک و امانوئل کانت و نیز نظریه‌های متاخر دربارۀ امر شگرف اشاره خواهد شد و در کنار آنها از نظریه‌های ویلیامز نیز بهره خواهیم گرفت.

William Carlos Williams’s poetry is known for the vividness of its imagery and the minimalism of its form. But what Williams achieves within just a few lines is nothing short of magic. The intimate bond he makes with his seemingly insignificant surrounding world gives an air of sublimity to his poems. The sense of indefinable awe that pervades Williams’s poetry, however, does not stem from a grand and boundless source. Williams finds an almost transcendent aura in the most familiar, mundane, and homely moments of everyday life. This quality of finding the extraordinary in the ordinary has been called the ‘trivial sublime.’ Drawing on theories of the sublime, as well as those of romantic transcendentalism and the genre of haiku, this paper attempts to examine the modality of such sublimity in the poetry of Williams. Such theories will include Edmund Burke's and Immanuel Kant's notions of sublime as well as the theoretical issues proposed by Williams himself.
