Cognitive Analysis of Conceptual Metaphors in Contemporary Persian and English Poetry [English]

چکیده

Conceptual metaphors, as fundamental tools of thought and language, play an important role in organizing complex concepts and representing human experiences. According to Lakoff and Johnson’s theory, metaphors are formed through mapping between source and target domains and unconsciously make abstract concepts understandable using concrete and tangible concepts. In this study, the three types of structural, ontological, and directional metaphors in contemporary Persian and English poetry have been identified and compared. The findings show that there are similarities, including the extensive use of ontological and directional metaphors between the two languages. For example, concepts such as happiness and success are associated with the upward direction in both languages. At the same time, there are also differences, such as the emphasis on nature and spirituality in Persian poetry versus the focus on technology and science in English poetry. This research shows that the human mind uses sensory experiences, image schemas, and cognitive mappings to shape and understand conceptual metaphors in poetry. This process, in addition to reflecting cultural worldviews, helps in cognitive simplification and processing complex information. Finally, this study provides a suitable platform for further research in the field of comparative literature and the role of metaphors in the interaction between language, culture, and human cognition.
