The study aims to examine the development of speculative genre in Arabic literature. Through addressing genre theory and literary history, a close textual analysis to three novels— Year 3000 by the Omani novelist Salem Al-Tuwaih, Turab by the Kuwaiti novelist Hussein Al-Mutawa, and The Shelf of Today (What the Master Could Not Obtain) by the Saudi novelist Najwa Al-Otaibi— is employed to further identify and explore the poetics of the speculative novel as well as its aesthetic and thematic structures. The findings indicate that the speculative novel has maintained a relatively limited and unpopular across Arab countries, with its early manifestation closely linked to science fiction. However, the beginning of the third millennium marks a turning point, especially when concerns about the future began to shape narrative discourse in Arabic fiction more broadly through projecting contemporary scientific, social, and political realities into imagined futures. The study further demonstrates recurring poetic elements characterized by paratextual, spatial and temporal strategies, along with the interplay between realistic and imaginative hybrid characters which showcase the novels’ capacity to anticipate the implications of scientific and social transformations on the individual and society.showcase the novels’ capacity to anticipate the implications of scientific and social transformations on the individual and society.
