Intersectional Feminism and Neo-Slave Narratives in Simin Daneshvar’s Savushun and Toni Morrison’s Beloved

Abstract

This article explores the cross-discourse of feminism and neo-slavery narratives by recounting the experiences of women and how to confront and revise the narratives of neo-slavery. The present study examines the characterization and qualities of the main female characters in the novels of Simin Daneshvar’s Savushun and Toni Morrison’s Beloved. These female novelists depict the pains and sufferings of discrimination and oppression in a patriarchal society in a new form of women's servitude and slavery in today's society. The current research analyzes the main female characters of the stories in four elements from the feminist point of view and modern narrative narration-based library studies. Despite the differences in the writing style and the way of storytelling, initially, the woman is depicted as a passive creature, submissive to the man and the dominant culture, and then, the female characters of the two selected novels seem strong and determined, contrary to the ruling position of the society, and because of the ability and resistance they have, female characters can find themselves and their position. The results show that the colonial/post-colonial, hidden/visible social and cultural layer, along with the feminist conflict about the visualization of the experience in neo-slavery, can affect the intersection of neo-slavery narratives in novels.
