However, most researchers have focused on testing breadth rather than depth of vocabulary or receptive-productive dimensions of vocabulary knowledge (Read, 2000; Nation, 2001; Wesche & Paribahkt, 1996). The present research investigates the predicting variables of vocabulary knowledge across two (high and low) proficiency levels, using the three dimensional framework of Henriksen (1999) which is composed of breadth, depth, and receptive-productive dimensions. 73 Iranian EFL students studying at universities or language institutes participated in this study. They were divided into a high and a low group based on their mean scores and standard deviation on TOEFL. Breadth of vocabulary knowledge was investigated using predictors of vocabulary size (Nation & Beglar, 2007) and knowledge of words from different frequency bands (Zareva, 2005). Receptive-productive dimension was examined by a new measure developed for this study, and depth was studied using Depth of Vocabulary Knowledge Test developed by Qian (2002). The results of stepwise regression indicate that the model which best predicts total vocabulary knowledge for the low group is a single predictor one consisting of vocabulary size, while the best model for the high group is a single predictor one consisting of knowledge of words from different frequency bands. The article concludes with a discussion of the findings and their possible implications for designing vocabulary tests.}, keywords = {Breadth of vocabulary knowledge,Depth of vocabulary knowledge,Language proficiency,vocabulary test}, title_fa = {بررسی متغیرهای پیش‌بینی کنندة دانش واژگانی در سطوح مختلف توانش زبانی}, abstract_fa = {در سالهای اخیر شاهد نوزایی تحقیقات علمی در زمینة آزمون دانش واژگانیم (باکمن، 2000). اما توجه بیشتر محققان به بعدگستردگی واژگانی معطوف بوده است و دیگر جوانب این دانش مانند ژرفا، توان پذیرشی- فعال کمتر مورد توجه واقع شده است (رید،2007؛ نیشن، 2001؛ وشه و پریبخت، 1996) پژوهش حاضر به بررسی متغیرهای پیش‌بینی دانش واژگان بااستفاده از چارچوب سه بعدی هنریکسن (1999) یعنی: گستردگی، ژرفا و پذیرشی- فعال در دو سطح توانش زبانی ضعیف و قوی در بین فراگیران زبان انگلیسی می‌پردازد. 73 زبان‌آموز که در دانشگاه و مؤسسات آموزش زبان انگلیسی به تحصیل مشغول بودند، در این پژوهش شرکت کردند. با توجه به میانگین و انحراف معیار در آزمون تافل، ‌آزمودنی‌ها به دو گروه ضعیف و قوی تقسیم شدند. بعد وسعت دانش واژگانی آزمودنی‌ها با سنجش اندازه‌ واژگان (نیشن و بگلار 2007) و آزمون واژگان از بسامدهای مختلف (زروا 2005) و بعد پذیرشی– فعال به وسیلة ابزاری نوین که برای این منظور طراحی شده بوده، اندازه‌گیری شد. بعد ژرفای دانش واژگان آزمودنی‌ها با آزمون سنجش ژرفای واژگان کایان (2002) اندازه گرفته شد. بررسی نتایج آزمون رگرسیون گام به گام، حاکی از آن است که بهترین مدل برای پیش‌بینی دانش کلی واژگان برای گروه ضعیف مدل تک‌پش‌بین اندازه واژگان و برای گروه قوی مدل تک پیش‌بین دانش افراد از واژه‌ها با از دسته‌های بسامدی مختلف است. پژوهش حاضر با بحث دربارة یافته‌ها و پیشنهادهایی برای طراحی آزمون‌های واژگان خاتمه می‌یابد}, keywords_fa = {Breadth of vocabulary knowledge,Depth of vocabulary knowledge,Language proficiency,vocabulary test}, url = {https://jor.ut.ac.ir/article_27983.html}, eprint = {https://jor.ut.ac.ir/article_27983_d12b44b3808cbf3c200e3ce2762577bf.pdf} }
